Regroup Turns 20: Two Decades of Mass Notification Done Right
Two decades ago, mass notification looked very different. Organizations relied on phone trees, scattered email lists, and manual processes, often scrambling to get critical information out in time. When every second mattered, many often struggled to communicate clearly and reliably. Regroup was built to change that.
The Early Years
Regroup was founded in 2006 at Stanford University, in the heart of the Silicon Valley tech community. Built by students who experienced firsthand the challenges of ineffective communication, the goal was simple: create a faster, more reliable way to reach people during emergencies.
Higher education institutions were among the first to adopt the platform, using SMS-based alerts to keep their communities informed and safe. From 2009 onward, Regroup experienced rapid growth as more universities, colleges, and even K-12 schools and districts adopted the platform to keep their communities safe and informed.
Scaling Across Industries and Use Cases
What began in higher education quickly proved valuable across other sectors. As organizations faced similar communication challenges, Regroup expanded into healthcare, government, and enterprise environments throughout the early 2010s.
Healthcare organizations — from hospital networks to assisted living facilities — began using Regroup to communicate better with internal teams, fill open shifts, and provide better care to patients. Cities, states, and counties across the United States adopted Regroup to keep citizens informed during severe weather, wildfires, and other major public events. Companies across many sectors including financial services, transportation, hospitality and more, also began adopting Regroup to improve operational efficiency, coordinate internal teams better, and respond better to both routine events and emergencies.
Each new industry brought new requirements for compliance, scale, security, redundancy, and integration, which pushed the platform to evolve. Regroup grew from a simple alerting system into a multi-channel communication platform capable of reaching people through SMS, email, voice, push notifications, digital signage, and more.
Regroup became not just a tool, but a critical part of how organizations operate during emergencies.
Mass Notification System that Scales with Customers
As the landscape of communication and risk evolved, so did Regroup.
The launch of the mobile app in 2015 allowed administrators to send alerts from anywhere, while IPAWS integration enabled organizations to deliver messages through FEMA’s national emergency alerting system.
The addition of advanced features like desktop notifications, integrations with physical security hardware systems, and expanded messaging channels put Regroup at the forefront of innovation and made it the central nervous system of organizational preparedness for hundreds, then thousands of customers. Alerts could be triggered by external systems like fire alarms, and distributed to every device from personal cell phones to digital signage throughout sprawling campuses.
In 2020, during the pandemic, Regroup made its platform available to educational institutions at no cost — reinforcing the company’s commitment to public safety during one of the world’s most tumultuous and unstable times. That same year, Regroup was named a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador after simultaneously deepening our partnership with the National Weather Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to ensure Regroup clients have the tools and information they need to keep people safe and informed during severe weather events.
By 2023, Regroup had completely redefined its award-winning mass notification platform by introducing a modern interface and faster workflows. The platform also expanded beyond messaging into a more complete safety and business continuity ecosystem. New capabilities included Regroup’s Threat Intelligence Suite, which aggregates data from over 4,000 sources to help organizations identify risks before they escalate, plan accordingly, and respond quickly all from within the Regroup platform.
Regroup’s most recent innovations include Secure Track, which allows individuals like students or lone workers to securely share their location with emergency managers or safety teams and receive help rapidly if needed. In 2026, Regroup is planning major product releases including integrated Incident Management within the platform to enable teams to respond to longer-duration events in more coordinated ways.
The Scale and Impact of 20 Years
After twenty years, the real story of Regroup is more than just the platform and technological innovation — it’s about the people behind every message sent.
Year after year, emergency managers in coastal areas reach entire communities with critical weather alerts, guiding people out of the path of deadly hurricanes and tropical storms. Universities have used Regroup to send alerts that helped stop active assailants on campus, while many others have issued lockdowns and used Regroup to practice drills that keep people aware, prepared, and safe. Healthcare providers connect with patients faster, delivering care when seconds matter and improving quality of life in assisted living facilities. Operations leaders keep teams informed and moving safely through uncertainty. Local governments across the United States communicate clearly, respond decisively, and protect its citizens when it matters most.
At scale, that impact is profound. Today, Regroup supports more than 10 million contacts and delivers up to a billion messages each year. Our platform can send thousands of messages per minute across SMS, email, voice, and push notifications. But those numbers only tell part of the story. What truly matters is what those messages enable: threats stopped in their tracks, lives kept out of danger, patients cared for more quickly, organizations running more effectively, and communities made safer.
Twenty years in emergency communication isn’t just a milestone — it’s a reflection of trust built over time, in moments when there’s no room for hesitation or confusion. Each alert sent represents a decision to act. Each message delivered is a chance to protect, to inform, to lead.
And while technology has evolved, our purpose has never changed. We exist to support the people who are there when it matters most and take responsibility for keeping others safe.
