Best Ways to Generate Job Leads

Let's help each other during this difficult job market.  Share your "best practices" when seeking work (job, internship or volunteer).

As a start, I've always generated my best job leads through internships and professional associations in which I volunteered to take an active role in supporting their activities.   I also think www.indeed.com  and its Email Alert function is the best online tool to access jobs posted on other job boards, company websites and civil service announcements.

What else has worked for you?

Bob alerted me last semester to the INDEED.com one-stop-shop employment site.  I must say that it is very easy to use & certainly a useful tool for anyone looking for a job.  The Advanced Search feature allows a user to refine results by such criteria as salary & location.  I have added a link to INDEED on the Begley Library Career & Job Hunting Library Research Guide.

Nothing beats the experience of an internship; no exuses, just do it.  Figure out how to fit it around a work schedule.

Any organization needs its members to volunteer, even the new members, and it provides you with an opportunity to network and get your name out there.

In addition to the above,  I used my personal contacts  to research the needs of a law office (including where to go for my education) and asked a friend (who is a lawyer) to take a chance on me for only 10 hours a week.  By the time I finished my degree at SCCC, I was working full-time as a paralegal.  Tell everyone you know what you are doing and to keep an ear out for job leads.   I also met with a law office recruiter and asked what law offices in the Capital District were looking for in a job candidate and how I could make myself a more desireable candidate.
