Woodrow Hutchison, Class of 1940
Woodrow “Woody” Hutchison died October 21st, 2009 at 90 years of age. He graduated in 1940 with a bachelor degree in Education.
Woody was drafted in 1940 and was sent to the Philippines. Captured by Japanese forces, he survived the Bataan Death March and was shipped to Japan. Forced to perform slave labor for Mitsubishi Corporation in a copper mine for three years, he was finally liberated with the Japanese surrender.
Woody earned three athletic letters while at Highlands. After his return to the states, he went on to play professional basketball. He was also drafted to play football. He would go on to become a school administrator and coach in California after retiring from his basketball career.
A truly remarkable man and Highlands Cowboy, he was inducted into the H-Club hall of fame in 2002.
