Middle Level Institute

The School of Education’s Center for Professional Development is holding a Middle Level Institute this August. This four-day educational opportunity will bring together a wealth of presenters and educators, all devoted to providing the best possible tools for middle school educators.The Center for Professional Development was organized this year at Highlands to help address educational issues across the state.


Highlands Computer Science Professor and Student do Robotics Research at Sandia Labs

A New Mexico Highlands University computer science professor and one of his students are doing state-of-the-art robotics research this summer at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque.

Professor Gil Gallegos and his student, Jeff Thornton, were selected to work at Sandia as part of the Faculty and Student Teams, or FaST, Program, a cooperative effort between the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.

The FaST Program is new at Sandia this summer.

“We’ll be writing all the software for the controls for the robot,” Gallegos said. “The robot has the appearance of a Mars rover but is much bigger. It has twelve joints: six wheels and six shoulders.”

Opening for Donnelly Library Beisman Collection August 13 During Las Vegas Heritage Week

The Highlands University Donnelly Library will hold a grand opening for its Beisman Collection Friday, Aug. 13, during Las Vegas Heritage Week.

Henry E. Beisman was born in 1898 in Loma Parda, N.M., near Watrous, and died in 1992. He was a well-known local civil engineer and surveyor in San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe counties. The Beisman family is donating their father’s extensive historical collection to the university, including some of the only remaining surveys from the original town of Las Vegas, as well as other early maps, survey equipment, and books. Some of the most unique items in the collection will be on display at the grand opening, which will be at 2 p.m. on the third floor of the Donnelly Library at 802 National Ave.

Student Orientation Leaders Welcome New Students

Highlands University student orientation leaders perform a boot camp skit to kickoff new student orientation June 25. Reporting for duty left, Roxy Avalos, Matt Guzman, and Makisi Maka. New students and their parents were on campus for a day of university information, tours, food and fun organized by the Office of Academic Support Services.

The Las Vegas chapter of Alumni will be holding a Viva la Fiesta gathering on July 2 at the Gene Torres Golf Course.  Admission will be $5, and Los Tropicales will be providing the music. Scheduled for 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Don't miss the fun!


Plates with Pride

You might have missed out on having one of the first 100 plates, but you can still show your Cowboy pride! Just visit the Motor Vehicle Department to pick up a plate. Only $37 of which $25 is returned to the university for faculty, staff and campus projects.

Cowgirl Volleyball High School Round-Up Dates set for 8/6-8/7

The NMHU Volleyball program will be hosting their second annual “Cowgirl High School Round-Up” volleyball jamboree on 8/6 and 8/7. Coach Deisler and staff had a great turnout of 20 teams last season and hope to better last year’s attendance.

“This is a great opportunity for teams from around the state to get some great game experience before they start their 2010 season. This will be a great teaching tool for anyone who attends” says NMHU Head Coach Jim Deisler of the “Cowgirl High School Round-Up”.

Las Vegas Alumni Chapter Seeking New Board Members.  We’re looking for volunteers for the Las Vegas Chapter to serve on its board.  If interested, please contact Jim Mandarino at alumni@nmhu.edu.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.

We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation. If you are willing to be a class agent contact Jim Mandarino at alumni@nmhu.edu.
